Claire Buckley has responded to an appeal by leading infertility expert, Professor Robert Winston, to join a tough, women-only cycling challenge in Kerala, India, to raise funds to improve the health of women and babies across the globe.
Claire, from Thorpe, near Norwich, is Senior Business Support Officer at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk.
Hundreds of women from across the UK have already helped Professor Winston raise over £4m for Genesis Research Trust’s Women for Women fund by taking part in cycling challenges around the world.
I can only admire the determination and commitment of all those taking part - PCC Stephen Bett
Claire (pictured right) is joining this woman-only challenge in October and will cycle approximately 300km over 5 days cycling from Kochi, a major port on the west coast, and finishing in Marari. She needs to raise a minimum of £3,100 and is asking local people and companies to help her reach that target. This money will help fund ground-breaking medical research work being done at a major research institute at Hammersmith Hospital in London.
“I turned 40 last year and was encouraged by my best friend, Alison Senter to join her on this incredible challenge. Not only have I had friends and family affected by the areas researched by Genesis Research Trust, but as I approached 40, I realised that I didn’t want to get to 70 and look back and to think I never challenged myself. My philosophy is that we are only here once and life isn’t a dress rehearsal,” Claire said:
Stephen Bett, Norfolk’s PCC, said: “I wish Claire every success with her challenge which sounds a genuine adventure for a very good cause. I can only admire the determination and commitment of all those taking part and hope the weather and terrain are kind to them.”
Professor Robert Winston, Chairman, Genesis Research Trust, said: “Funds raised by Claire will support women scientists and clinicians to specialise in research affecting women and their babies – empowering more women to lead in this field. They will work in the research centre to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions which cause miscarriages, genetic diseases, infertility and cancer. With nearly 250 babies dying each week in the UK from complications during pregnancy, our work has never been so essential for women and babies nationwide”
