Cyber crime is a growing area of criminal activity and one of the areas of focus for Stephen and Jenny. The Deputy Commissioner attended a national conference on cyber crime for Police and Crime Commissioners and Chief Constables and heard that while ‘traditional’ crime is falling cyber crime is very much on the rise.
After the conference Jenny said: “The shift towards cyber crime means police forces must shift resources too, whether that be in the areas of crime prevention or investigation. The world has changed and while traditional crime may be falling criminals are finding other ways to commit crime and police forces must respond. PCCs must make sure constabularies are properly resourced to deal with this shift and are developing and deploying the expertise in this area. As for crime prevention it is now a case of not only reminding people to make sure their doors are locked but to make sure their online accounts are too.”
